Academic & General IELTS by IDP
Learn about IELTS exam dates for 2026, test centre locations, registration deadlines, and preparation tips. Stay updated and plan your test schedule.
In this article, we will look at the IDP IELTS exam dates for 2026, along with test centre information, registration details, and more. There are two main IELTS tests — IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training and, following a major change announced by the IELTS Partners, the way these tests are delivered in India is shifting.

Â
The British Council, IDP, and Cambridge (the IELTS co-owners) have officially confirmed that from mid-2026, IELTS will no longer be offered as a paper-based test, all tests will move to computer delivery. In most markets, the final date for paper-based testing is 27 June 2026. A limited "Writing on Paper" option will remain available in selected markets for candidates who prefer to handwrite their Writing answers, but the rest of the test is computer-delivered.
If you were planning a paper-based test, check availability at your nearest centre immediately, as this option is being withdrawn.
Computer-delivered IELTS is now the primary format in India and offers far more flexibility than a fixed calendar. Tests are available up to 7 days a week, with up to 3 sessions per day at major centres, excluding national holidays and major festivals. Because dates are offered almost daily, there is no fixed monthly schedule to publish in practice, you can usually find a slot within a few days at a major-city centre.
The general daily slots are:
| Slot | Timings |
|---|---|
|
Slot 1Â |
09:00 am – 12:00 pm |
|
Slot 2Â |
01:00 pm – 04:00 pm |
|
Slot 3Â |
05:00 pm – 08:00 pm |
Exact slot times can vary by test centre. Your Speaking test for computer-delivered IELTS is typically confirmed a couple of days before your exam.
Until paper-based testing is withdrawn, IDP conducts it on a fixed schedule, up to 4 times a month, around 48 fixed dates across the year, usually on Thursdays or Saturdays. IELTS Academic is offered on all of these dates, while IELTS General Training is offered on roughly half of them. For paper-based tests, the Speaking section may be scheduled up to 7 days before or after your main test date.
Â
Because these are among the final paper-based dates and exact dates vary by city, confirm the live schedule on the official IDP IELTS India portal before booking.
