The Rice Institute opened on Sept. 23, 1912, with 77 students and a dozen faculty. The campus is abundantly green. The Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum which has around 4000 trees and shrubs is spread throughout the campus. The university's first president, Edgar Odell Lovett, envisioned the campus to have a uniform architecture style and improved aesthetics. In September 2011, Travel+Leisure listed Rice's campus as one of the most beautiful in the United States. Lovett Hall, named for Rice's first president, is the university's most iconic campus building. Duncan Hall is Rice's computational engineering building. The Academic Quad which harbors the statue of William Marsh Rice, the founder also has the Lovett Hall, Fondren Library, Herzstein Hall, the largest amphitheater of the entire campus, Rayzor Hall for the languages, and Anderson Hall of the Architecture department, Sewall Hall for the social sciences and arts, the humanities building. The on-campus football facility, Rice Stadium, opened in 1950. The Super Bowl VIII was held here. Also, Rice was where John F. Kennedy gave his speech on September 12, 1962, wherein he challenged the nation to send a man to the moon by the end of the decade.
Housing Services at Rice University combines Undergraduate Housing, Residential Dining, Graduate Apartments, and Summer Conference services. Students can also choose to live off-campus and dine off-campus. The university has created an information page for such students as well where they can get to know everything regarding living off-campus on their website. For students who wish to live on campus, there are two options- the Rice Graduate Apartments and the Rice Village Apartments. The apartments are furnished and there is a variety of floor plans. The total research expenditure at the George R. Brown School of Engineering (Rice University) was $69.2 million in 2017-18. The campus is well-connected by road, rail, and air routes. Light Rail – 700, Buses 28, 56, and 84 are the main means to reach the campus. The closest airport is the William P. Hobby Airport about 14 miles south-east of the university. However, greater connectivity and flight options are offered by the George Bush Intercontinental Airport which lies 24 miles north of the main campus.
