University of Regina - Overview & Background

The University of Regina is a public university for research, based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Founded in 1911 as Methodist Church of Canada's private denominational high school, the university opened in 1925 as a junior college with the University of Saskatchewan. In 1974, it became an autonomous university.

The university’s student newspaper, The Carillon, is a member of the CUP, Canadian University Press. The student body has 16,501 full-time and part-time students in the Fall 2019 – a record number - enrolled in its 10 faculties, 25 academic departments and schools, 18 research centers and institutes, and 3 federated colleges (Campion College, First Nations University of Canada, and Luther College).

Infrastructure

The campus on Wascana Lake is on the southeast of the old campus. The old campus is now used as the Museum of Natural History, the Regina Conservatory of Music, the Normal School, etc.

Since the late 1990s, multiple new buildings were added that include:

First Nations University of Canada and Research & Innovation Centre along with a significant expansion of the Education Building. Dr. John Archer Library was opened in 1967 as the main library on campus. It is one of the first three buildings of the current campus (the other being the buildings for classrooms and laboratories). La Cite, the first French University in Saskatchewan, was opened by the university. Regina Research Park is also next to the school, closely interacting with the university departments.

Residing Options

Residence facilities give students the opportunity to learn while living comfortably. There are opportunities for residence at the following locations:

Kīšik Towers:

  • list items Offers multi-use rooms and community kitchen. Room styles include apartments with two or four bedrooms, studio apartments, and spacious single bedrooms with private bathrooms. Total fee per semester lies between $3,300 and $4,600 (for the year 2019-2020) depending on the room style chosen. It is mandatory to purchase the Lighter Side Plan - $2,657, at a min for single dorm style rooms. There are more plans acc. to appetite choices.

La Cité Résidence (Formerly La Résidence):

  • list items Is a comfortable, close-knit residence with 50 spacious rooms of the dormitory style charging total fees of $4,604.50 onwards per semester (for the year 2019-2020) including dining plan.

Paskwāw and Wakpá Towers:

  • list items Are located between the Dr. Archer Library and the Education building. Residents can choose from a variety of apartment styles that include a shared kitchen, common living space and washrooms. Both towers also offer dorm-style rooms with either private washrooms or shared washrooms, for students seeking our most economical rate! Both towers offer a variety of apartments, dorm-style rooms with either private or shared washrooms.
  • list items The total fee per semester ranges between $2,395 and $4,062(for the year 2019-2020) depending on the room style chosen. Dorm-style room and Studio room charges do not include meal plans that are mandatory to purchase at an extra charge of minimum $2,657 for dorm-style rooms (as there are no cooking facilities in the rooms) and minimum $886 for studio rooms and executive dorms.

College West:

  • list items Offers common areas, interactive and collective study rooms with enough space, and theater. It includes apartments with 2-Bedroom to 7-Bedroom styled rooms. The total fee per semester ranges from $3,200 to $3,900 (for the year 2019-2020) depending on the room style chosen. Dining plan is excluded and not mandatory to buy.

Financial Aid

In every course and year of study at the University of Regina, the university offers grants, bursaries and prizes for graduates. Throughout Canada, the federal and provincial / territorial governments offer student financial assistance and student loans. Saskatchewan Integrated Student Loans and U.S. Student loans are available to the students as loan services. For students enrolled through a Federated College, Federated College Awards are available.

University of Regina Location

The main campus of the University of Regina is located in southeast Regina, at the intersection of Wascana Parkway and Kramer Boulevard, just off the Ring Road. Regina International Airport is the closest major airport to the University of Regina, situated in Regina, Canada, 11 km from the University of Regina center. Buses, taxis and cabs are important alternatives to public transport that can be used to access the school.

Regina Transit provides the University of Regina with regular and express bus service. Students at the University of Regina are offered a U-Pass option with their Student Union fees starting in Sept 2016. Between the Fall and Winter semesters, it gives students a low-cost bus pass. Since the Main Campus is located on Wascana Lake's shores, it is possible to take the multi-use pathway system through the Wascana Center for class. You can drive your private vehicles to the school, but you have to pay for parking.

Regina is a nice place to call home. There's something for everyone with hundreds of parks and plenty of leisure and entertainment facilities, arts and cultural centres, galleries and performance spaces, major attractions and activities throughout the year. Libraries and cycle paths lead to a quality of life that is outstanding.
