The department of Biosystems Engineering allows students to pursue careers in the fields of environmental engineering, bioprocess engineering, biomedical engineering, and agriculture and natural resources. The Department offers an accredited undergraduate program that integrates biological sciences into engineering and graduate programs leading to MSc or MEng.
It is intended for students who want an advanced degree with an emphasis on the practice of engineering.
A minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework is required. The following conditions must be met:
Students must complete the programme in approximately 12 months. The programme does not support any stipends for students.
A minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework is required, and a thesis must be submitted based on the original research conducted. The research will be supervised by a professor.
Students must complete the programme in two years or less. Research stipend support is not guaranteed, however, the majority of the students do receive financial support either in the form of a scholarship or research stipend.
Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a graduate programme toward M.Sc. degree. It is an interdisciplinary programme between the faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Science.
The department undertakes research across seven main areas: Environmental; Geotechnical; Structures; Transportation; Water Resources; Construction Engineering and Management; Masonry and Cementitious Materials
The department offers programmes of coursework and research leading to the degrees of:
M.Sc. programme involves a research project and associated thesis in which students must demonstrate self-study capabilities and general mastery of a specialized field of civil engineering. Courses include: Modern Railway Engineering; Analysis and Design of Freight Transport Systems; Transportation Engineering in Developing Regions; Analysis and Design of Passenger Transport Systems; Sustainability in Construction; Advanced Construction Management
The M. Eng. programme is course-based and caters primarily to practising engineers.
The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) programme from the department consists of both coursework and research, with a final thesis and thesis presentation. The maximum time frame for the completion of the course is 4 years full-time and 6 years part-time, however, students are expected to graduate within two years. Students have to complete at least 18-credit hours of ECE Graduate Courses along with 12 hours of Advisor approved courses.
Presently, the Department of Mechanical Engineering offers graduate degree through the Faculty of Graduate Studies like Master of Science, Master of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in Thermal Sciences; Fluid Mechanics; Manufacturing and Production; Applied Mechanics and Design; Materials Science and Engineering.
Programme is for working engineers and internationally trained engineers. Applicants must have at least a B.Sc. degree in Engineering. The minimum requirement for the award of the M.Eng. degree is 24 credit hours of coursework. For the Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme, applicants are normally required to hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from a recognized university.
Applicants with other engineering degrees or with honours degrees in related areas may also be accepted upon the discretion of the department. In certain cases (e.g., non-engineering graduates), the acceptance may be subject to satisfying certain requirements. Contact the department for more information.
All candidates for the M.Sc. degree are required to register in MECG 7890, M.Sc. Graduate Research Seminar.
The department has many state-of-art laboratories and facilities, with strong connections to industry. They have a Tier I Canadian Research Chair (CRC) in Aerospace Materials, a Tier II CRC in Applied Mechanical Design and an NSERC/Manitoba Hydro Industrial Associate Chair in Alternative Energy.
In the undergraduate course, the Major degree programme offers specialization in Physics & Astronomy. An M.Sc. degree in Physics normally consists of both coursework and thesis. The Comprehensive M.Sc. programme in Medical Physics is a two-year (18-month coursework, 6-month research project) program which requires 36 credits.
A clinical research project in an approved laboratory and the submission of a research report is also necessitated. Upon the completion of the coursework and research project, the student will also have to clear a comprehensive oral examination.
The expected duration of the course is two years. The students should have a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Astronomy, Mathematics and Physics, or Engineering Physics.
The Department of Chemistry offers the Chemistry undergraduate program (Honours, Major, Minor) and, jointly with Microbiology, the Biochemistry undergraduate program (Honours, Major).
The Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme in Chemistry and Biochemistry offered by the department requires students to submit a Research Proposal (12-month milestone) and a written thesis. There are 9 credit hours of graduate-level courses, an oral examination and defence of a thesis.
At the department, research is undertaken in the following areas: Analytical research; Biochemistry research; Inorganic research; Materials Science research; Organic research; Physical research; Theoretical research; Spectroscopy research
Graduate students are provided with an annual stipend of CD$20,000/year for 2 years. Students are paid bi-weekly.
The Department of Biological Sciences was officially formed in July 2007. It integrated the former Departments of Botany and Zoology and the Biology Teaching Program. Biological Sciences has faculty from multiple disciplines in research and education who are committed to advancing the understanding of biological structure and function.
At the undergraduate level, the department offers one of three possible degrees:
The M.Sc. thesis-based programme is a combination of coursework and research component. The expected duration of completion is 2 years.
The department of Biological Sciences provides funds to Master’s students to provide support for their conference travel costs. The amount is $250.00 if they are presenting (poster or oral talk) and $100 if they are not presenting. There is also the NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships; for the MSc students, the amount is CD$17,300.
Then, there is the Major G.E.H Barrett-Hamilton Memorial Scholarship of CD$8625.00. It is provided to the academically excellent students in their 1st or 2nd year of graduate studies in the area of animal biology and demonstrates research potential based on reference letter and scholarship based on project reports, publications, conference presentations, or related accomplishments.
The department offers study programmes in several branches of mathematics leading to the Master of Science degree. Some of the chief branches offered are:
Since Fall 2018, the department has been providing financial support of CD$20,000 for thesis-based MSc students as direct aid and tutorial/or marking employment. The department offers one entrance scholarship valued at $50,000 to an outstanding student in the first year of his/her enrollment in the MSc programme.
Areas of research in the department are:
At the undergraduate level, the department has an honours program which is a 120 credit-hour program in the Faculty of Science. Pre-Master is a one-year programme for students who lack sufficient background for admission to a Masters program. Course requirements are set by the Graduate Associate Head to address an individual’s academic deficiencies and have the eligibility for the Master’s programmes.
The thesis-based MSc program is a 2-year programme that involves coursework and a research component. Students need to complete 5 courses (15 credit hours) including Research. Methodologies. Students have to write a research proposal and thesis, which must be formally approved by a supervisory committee.
