Toronto Metropolitan University (previously known as Ryerson University) is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Ryerson Institute of Technology was established in 1948 in response to the need for skilled trades people following the Second World War. Proving its commitment to build on its research capacity and academic reach, Ryerson gained the status of an official university in June 1993.

The university is Canada's leader in innovative, career-focused education and entrepreneurship. It offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs. Research at Ryerson is on an upward trajectory of success and growth: externally funded research has doubled in the past four years.

Ryerson University is home to the Ted Rogers School of Management, Canada's largest undergraduate business school; the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, Canada's third-largest undergraduate engineering school; the Faculty of Arts; the Faculty of Communication & Design; the Faculty of Community Service; and the Faculty of Science.

In addition to offering full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate programs leading to Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees, the university also offers part-time degrees, distance education, and certificates through the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education.

The campus of Ryerson University houses Ryerson Square; Mattamy Athletic Centre and the library.

Ryerson Square

Ryerson's central hub, known as Ryerson Square, is a pedestrian area that runs along Gould and Victoria Streets. It is lined with seating spots and potted plants and is used for a weekly farmers’ market, student group sign-up days and festivities associated with Ryerson's week of welcome.

Mattamy Athletic Centre

The Mattamy Athletic Centre has sports venues and classrooms on upper levels. The street and lower levels have a Loblaws supermarket, a Joe Fresh store, an LCBO store, and parking. Ryerson and Loblaws have their own spaces. The Mattamy Athletic Centre (commonly known as the "MAC") has full-sized basketball and volleyball courts, the Mattamy Home Ice (NHL sized skating rink), a cardio room, a fitness centre with dumbbells and additional fitness machines.

The Ryerson Library

The Ryerson Library collection consists of over 500,000 books, 3,700 print journal titles and over $2 million of electronic resources, including approximately 23,000 e-journals, over 90,000 e-books, databases and indexes, geospatial data, and catalogued websites or electronic documents. The library ensures that it acquires materials to support the curriculum taught at the university and the research needs of faculty. All hard copy materials are housed in the library building at Gould and Victoria Streets.

On-Campus Accommodation

Ryerson has around 1417 beds in three residential buildings on campus.

The residential buildings are:

  • list items The Daphne Cockwell Complex (DCC) is open to all first-year applicants.
  • list items HOEM residence is Ryerson’s largest residence, with 30 floors and 593 rooms.
  • list items The International Living and Learning Centre (ILC) is again open to all first-year applicants.
  • list items Pitman Hall is Ryerson’s 2nd largest residence, with 14 floors and 565 rooms.

Below are the accommodation costs of the above buildings for each room style. The schedule below reflects 2019-2020 fees for a 32-week term. For the 2020-2021 session, expect a 3% to 5% increase.

  • list items Daphne Cockwell Complex (DCC): For two-Bedroom and four-Bedroom Apartments with a 7-day meal, the fees is $11,721 for the room and $5580 for the meal, while for the 5-day meal, the fees are around $11,721 for the room and $4120 for the meal.
  • list items The International Living and Learning Centre (ILC): For the Double room, the fees is around $8,044.06 for the room and $5580 for the meal, while for a Single room, the costs are $10,731.06 for the room and $5580 for the meal.

It also has a Pitman Apartment Declining Balance Meal Plan wherein the cost is around $980 for the meal. For the Paired Style // Single Room, it costs around $9,590.06 for the room and $5580 for the meal.

There are five near-campus student-housing buildings that house many students from Ryerson:

These buildings differ from each other in terms of room costs and facilities (kitchens, meal plans, room styles, etc.), but usually, all offer reasonable residence security, close proximity to campus, and social benefits of living with other students.

Please note that these are buildings are owned and operated by private businesses. Since they are not the properties of Ryerson, you will need to do research and contact them on your own for details. Most of the leases that these buildings offer are for 1 year, but short-term leases may also be considered.

Financial Aid

International Student Support (ISS) understands how important economic support is for any international student facing unexpected economic hardships. Below is a list of economic support options and scholarships available at Ryerson University for International students:

  • list items Salad King Awards: Five (5) prizes are provided with a financial prize of $1,000 each.
  • list items Scotiabank Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to top-year full-time undergraduate international students with a strong record of academic achievement. Unfortunately, this scholarship is not considered applicable for the first-year international students.
  • list items RSU Bursary: The financing is designed to support learners with serious financial needs on a short-term basis.
  • list items The Emergency Bursary: It is designed to help global learners who are experiencing an unforeseen economic need and are unable to fund private and/or educational costs while finishing their studies, despite their best efforts. It does not fund the entire financial need of a student and can be granted up to a maximum of $3,000 in increments of $500.

Toronto Metropolitan University (Ryerson University) Location

Ryerson University’s main campus is situated on the Yonge-University-Spadina TTC subway line between College and Dundas station, and if you are travelling by subway you can exit either subway station to discover Ryerson. If you're riding, it's one block south of Dundas on Yonge Street or one block south of Yonge on Victoria Street.

To reach Ryerson University, one can take either a bus or a vehicle. Taxi would be the simplest way if you are carrying luggage, although it is costly. UP Express is the next convenient choice. The most affordable choice is the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission).

Take the 192 Rocket bus to the Kipling metro, travel to Bloor-Yonge station and get off at Dundas Station by taking a temporary train.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ / CYTZ) is the closest airport to the university. It has international and domestic flights from Toronto, Canada, and is 5 km from the Ryerson University centre. Another significant airport is Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ / CYYZ), which is 35 km from Ryerson University and has international and national flights from Toronto, Canada. Kensington Market, Eaton Centre, Yonge-Dundas Square, Royal Ontario Museum, Ontario Art Gallery, Church and Wellesley Village, St. Lawrence Market, Maple Leaf Gardens are some great places to hang out at.
