Additive Manufacturing refers to a process through which digital 3D design data is used to build up a component in layers by depositing material instead of milling a workpiece from a solid block. Using computer-aided design (CAD) or 3D object scanners, additive manufacturing allows for the creation of objects with precise geometric shapes.
These are built layer by layer which is in contrast to the traditional manufacturing that often requires machining or other techniques to remove surplus material. Employment opportunities are available after completing a degree in Additive manufacturing in the following fields: manufacturing and design companies, supplier companies, research, consulting firms, automotive, defence and aerospace.
1. Master of Engineering (Professional)- Full-time 2-year course - You will need a 4-year bachelor’s degree in a related discipline (engineering). An overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no band less than 6 (or equivalent) is required too. To complete the Master of Engineering (Professional) degree, students must attain 16 credit points. Most students choose to study 4 units (credits) per trimester and usually undertake two trimesters each year. The Master of Professional Practice is a 2-2.5-year course meant for engineering professionals seeking advancement in their career.
2. PhD in Additive Manufacturing - A PhD is awarded for a substantial and original contribution to knowledge within the expected completion period of three years, with the maximum time limit of four years. The thesis may be presented in several formats and is usually limited to 100,000 words. This course is offered in the Waurn Ponds (Geelong) campus.
3. Masters by Research - Masters by Research degree is awarded for an original contribution to knowledge achieved in up to two years of full-time candidature (or two to four years of part-time candidature). Usually, a written thesis of no more than 50,000 words is submitted, although the thesis may be presented in several formats.
