The Graduate Record Examination, more commonly known as the GRE, is a standardized test conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for admission to top universities worldwide. Graduates and final-year undergraduate students from more than 160 countries take the GRE every year, as the test offers a holistic assessment of critical thinking, reasoning, and analytical writing skills.
Â
Once you take the exam, your GRE score remains valid for five years, giving you the flexibility to apply across multiple intakes and universities. Before you register, it helps to understand the complete GRE exam fee structure in India including the core registration fee and the additional charges for services like rescheduling or extra score reports so there are no surprises during booking.
In India, the GRE General Test fee is INR 22,000, and the GRE Subject Test fee is INR 14,500. This core registration fee already includes sending your scores to up to four institutions for free at the time of the test. Beyond the registration fee, ETS charges separate amounts for optional services, which add to the overall cost of the GRE only if you use them.

Rescheduling within 4 days of the test is not permitted, and this charge is over and above your original GRE exam fee.

Even with strong preparation, you may want to improve your score with another attempt. There is no special "retake" fee, retaking the GRE simply means paying the standard registration fee of INR 22,000 again for each new attempt. Remember that you can retake the GRE once every 21 days, up to five times in any rolling 12-month period.
At the time of the test, you can send your GRE scores to up to four institutions for free. If you wish to send your scores to more universities later, each additional score report costs INR 2,900 per recipient. This is a common cost for students applying to several universities, so it is worth factoring into your overall GRE budget.
