Know the reasons why Canada has been rejecting several student visas of late. Understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the approval rate and what is the solution.
Canada is one of the most sought-after study destinations in the world. Indian students go to Canada for higher education in huge numbers every year. Considering the job prospects and quality of education, Canadian study visas have always been in huge demand in India. However, in recent weeks, a large number of study visa applications have been denied by the Canadian High Commission. Even those with high IELTS scores and those already enrolled for online study in Canadian universities are facing visa rejections. Such students will have to re-apply for their visas now.
As per a report published in the Indian Express on 07th August 2021, the Canadian authorities have denied the study visas of thousands of applicants. Even the students having Visa Approval in Principle (AIP) are being rejected student visas by the concerned authorities. Due to COVID-19, visa approval was divided into two parts — AIP and biometrics. AIP is allotted only to those students who meet the eligibility criteria and have already got high scores in IELTS and deposited a one-year fee at a Canadian university.
Although this denial of study visas has been more or less a continual feature, the scale of rejection during the recent weeks is extraordinary.

It’s thousands in number as per the report. Top visa consultants said that the refusals have always been there but recently, the numbers of rejected visas have scaled in a humongous way. Many students even tweeted that visa refusal is about 60% in recent weeks.
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the suspension of direct flights to Canada. After the flights to Canada resumed, there was a huge backlog of students awaiting visa approval as 3-4 lakhs of study visa applications from India are still pending and it is tough for Canada to accommodate such high numbers of students in a matter of a few months. Therefore, the visas of such applicants whose cases were not very strong from their course’s point of view or based on their financial conditions were rejected.
It is a case of officials having to do a year’s work in a couple of months. Therefore, they are rejecting visas with weaker cases at the first stage so that they can take out some time to adjust themselves and then accommodate this enormous backlog of 6-7 months. In addition, students whose visas are rejected will have adequate time to improve their applications.
Other reasons for these recent visa rejections can incorporate the choice of the courses by the students. For example, if an applicant has a weak academic record, and he/she has opted for a difficult course, the visa rejection is almost certain. Also, if a student with a good academic record opts for an easy course that the student has already done in India, the visa can be rejected based on why the student wants to redo the same course.
When a visa is rejected, a general refusal letter is given, which doesn’t have the actual reason for rejection mentioned on it. To know the real reason, students can get their Global Case Management System (GCMS) or Computer Assisted Immigration Processing System (CAIPS) notes. They can get these notes in 35-40 days from the office of the Canadian High Commission and after going through these, students can apply by clearing all the doubts because on which they faced rejection.
Before everything else, the students should relodge their cases free of cost. Afterward, they should write the statement of purpose (SOP) very clearly where the applicants must mention the reason behind choosing to study in Canada. Also, they should talk about their academic profile, post-study plans, and the reasons for choosing the particular course, university, etc. In addition, the academic profile of the applicant and the good financial condition of the family are big determinants as due to severe setbacks to the economies globally every country wants international students with good academic record and a good financial condition.

With the advent of several new courses in every stream, students have many options when it comes to applying for higher studies abroad. New courses such as robotics, artificial intelligence, data science, etc., have created huge scope for international students. However, it is recommended to apply for courses that are related to the subject in which their academic record is good.
