Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

• Submit three letters of recommendation.
• One should be from your guidance counselor.
• Two should be from teachers who taught you in major academic courses like English, mathematics, social studies, sciences, or foreign languages, preferably in the last two years of high school.
• If applying to the Pratt School of Engineering, ensure at least one recommendation is from a math or science teacher.
• You may also submit one optional personal recommendation.

Essays

• Submit a one-page personal essay.
• This includes Long Essays for the common application and Short Essays specific to Duke.
• Write a long essay (650 words) from one of the seven prompts on the common app website.
• Short essay prompts vary by field:
• For Engineering applicants: Explain why you want to study engineering and why at Duke (150 words maximum).
• For Arts & Sciences applicants: Discuss why Duke is a good match for you and what attracts you to it (150 words maximum).
• Optional for all applicants: Share any perspective or experiences that help us understand you better, possibly related to your community or cultural background (250 words maximum).

• Official transcripts for all high school academic work.
• Proof of SAT or ACT test scores.
