University of Portsmouth Admission Requirements for International Students
You must submit certified and translated copies of your secondary (for undergraduate) or degree (for postgraduate) qualifications and grades.
English-language proficiency is required:
For most bachelor’s degrees: IELTS 6.0 with no component below 5.5.
For most master’s courses: IELTS 6.5-7.0, with no component below 6.0.
Some courses include extra entry checks such as: admissions tests, interviews, auditions, health checks (especially for health-care courses), criminal-records checks or a portfolio.
Applications must be accompanied by a personal statement explaining why you want to study the course and choose the university.
For international students applying for a visa: once you receive an offer you’ll need to complete the university’s CAS Shield steps (financial checks, credibility interview etc.).
If you don’t currently meet either the academic or English-language requirements, you may be eligible to join a foundation or pathway programme (via International College Portsmouth) before starting your degree.
Portsmouth University Scholarship
Chancellor’s Global Academic Merit Scholarship:
£5,000 fee reduction (first year).
Self-funded international student (overseas fee status).
Applied for full-time, on-campus undergraduate or postgraduate taught course for January 2026 entry.
Never previously studied at the University of Portsmouth.
Vice Chancellor’s Global Development Scholarship:
£2,500 fee reduction (first year).
From one of the listed eligible countries on the university website.
Self-funded, full-time on-campus undergrad or postgrad with annual fees ≥ £16,200 for Sept 2025 or Jan 2026 intake.
EU Scholarship:
Fee reduced to UK-student rate (exact amount varies).
For EU, EEA or Swiss nationals resident starting Sept or Jan 2025/26.
Applies to new undergrad, postgrad taught or research students.
Faculty of Science & Health Global Postgraduate Taught Scholarship (2025/26):
£2,000 fee reduction for first year.
For self-funded international students on full-time, on-campus postgraduate taught courses in the Faculty of Science & Health.
Sanctuary Scholarship:
Full tuition-fee waiver for undergraduate students along with support.
For students seeking asylum or dependents of those with humanitarian protection or Discretionary or Limited Leave to Remain.
For Undergraduate degree, full-time.
External Scholarships:
Varies depending on external funding.
For international/EU students who are eligible for external scholarship programmes.
