MSc International Urban Design at De Montfort University

The Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities at De Montfort University offers a Master of Science (MSc) in International Urban Design. This degree program lasts for 12 months and focuses on Architecture and Planning. For international students, the tuition fee is £14,600. To enroll in this course, students must have an IELTS score, and the minimum graduation percentage required for admission is 50%.

The course aims to build a clear understanding of the main ideas and current theories needed to tackle the challenges of urbanization in the 21st century worldwide.

It helps students develop skills in spatial design to address the complex social, economic, and environmental factors affecting cities, as well as cultural issues like the history and traditions of city design.

The program ends with a 'thesis' module. Students can choose between two paths. Both paths focus on 'design', but one allows students to complete their studies with a detailed written thesis, while the other combines a thesis with drawings, models, and illustrations along with a shorter written text.

All students can also take a year of industry placement before starting their thesis work.

By the end of the program, students will have gained important skills in explaining, communicating, and showing complex city analyses and proposals, supported by knowledge of theories related to current practices and global urban issues.

Applicants need to have a degree that is equal to a 2:2 or above UK bachelor’s honors degree in subjects like Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Town Planning, Geography, Urban Studies, Engineering Design, Three-Dimensional Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and Product Design. If applicants do not have formal qualifications but have a lot of industry experience, the university will look at their application on a case-by-case basis.
