The UK raised its student visa proof of funds twice in 2025. See the current bank balance required, the 28-day rule, and the errors that trigger refusals.
Quick Summary:
| What You Need to Know | The 2026 Reality |
|---|---|
|
Current maintenance, London |
£1,529 per month, up to 9 months (£13,761). |
|
Current maintenance, outside London |
£1,171 per month, up to 9 months (£10,539). |
|
When it changed |
11 November 2025, the second increase in one year. |
|
The 28-day rule |
Funds must stay at or above the required total every single day for 28 days. |
|
Closing balance age |
Statement must be dated within 31 days of your application. |
|
Biggest hidden trap |
A commercial bank or NBFC loan sanction letter often does not qualify on its own. |

Â
The UK Home Office increased the UK student visa financial requirements twice in a single year, on 2 January 2025 and again on 11 November 2025 through the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules (HC 1333). A large share of study-abroad pages ranking today still quote figures that are now obsolete: £1,334 and £1,023, or £1,483 and £1,136. Applying against any of these gets you refused, not warned.
Â
Indian nationals remain the largest group affected. In the year ending December 2025, they were the single most common nationality granted UK sponsored study visas, with 95,231 grants, around 23% of all main applicants, according to Home Office immigration statistics. More Indian students clear this hurdle than any other nationality, and more Indian students also trip over it, because the money side of the visa is precise and it keeps moving.
Â
This is what the proof of funds for UK student visa applications actually looks like in 2026: the current amounts, what the rulebook accepts as evidence, and the specific mistakes that get financially sound applicants refused. Not a checklist you could generate in thirty seconds. The reasoning behind the checklist.
Proof of funds is the financial evidence you submit to show you can pay for your studies and support yourself in the UK. It is not a formality. It is the document that convinces the caseworker you can cover your first-year tuition and your living costs without running short or working illegally.
Â
The UK asks for it for a few specific reasons:
Â
Â
No matter who requests it, the standard is the same. The UK student visa financial requirement exists to prove one thing: that your plan to study in the UK is funded, not hopeful.
The proof of funds for UK student visa applications has two parts: your outstanding first-year tuition, plus living costs (called maintenance) for up to 9 months. The maintenance figure depends only on where you study.
Â
For applications made on or after 11 November 2025, the current amounts confirmed on the gov.uk Student visa money page are:
Â
Â
London here means the City of London and the 32 London boroughs, so a university in Greater London counts as London even if the postcode does not feel central.
Â
Your total UK student visa bank balance is your outstanding first-year tuition plus the maintenance figure above. You can deduct any tuition already paid to the university, as recorded on your CAS, and up to £1,529 for a university accommodation deposit.
Â
For example, a one-year Master's outside London with £18,000 outstanding tuition plus £10,539 maintenance means £28,539, roughly ₹31.4 lakh at a rate near ₹110 to the pound.
Â
This figure has moved twice in the past year: from £1,334 and £1,023 before January 2025, to £1,483 and £1,136, and now to £1,529 and £1,171. Many pages still quote the older numbers, and applying against an obsolete figure means a refusal, not a warning. Check the live amount on gov.uk in the same week you apply.
Â
Budget separately for money you pay rather than show: the Student visa fee rose to £558 for applications from outside the UK from 8 April 2026, and the Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 per year, paid upfront for the full course. If you plan to bring dependants, an option limited since January 2024 mainly to research postgraduate and PhD students, confirm the separate dependant amount on gov.uk first.
Â

The rule is simple to write and easy to break. To meet the UK student visa funds requirement, the full amount must sit in a permitted account for at least 28 consecutive days, and the balance must never drop below the required total on any single day. The closing balance date on your statement must be no more than 31 days old on the date you submit your online application.
Â
Where applicants lose their visa on this rule:
Â
Â
Note: The money has to be visibly present the entire time, not only on the first and last day.
The Home Office cares about money that is liquid, verifiable, and traceable to you or a permitted sponsor. The accepted forms are narrower than most students assume.
Â
Accepted as proof of funds for UK student visa applications:
Â
Not accepted as proof of funds for a UK student visa:
Across the 35,000+ students GyanDhan has supported and the ₹11,000+ crore in education loans facilitated, it is one of the most misunderstood parts of the UK visa file.
Â
Â
So the uncertainty is never whether the loan is real. Banks such as SBI, ICICI, and Axis and NBFCs such as Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, and InCred all fund UK study routinely. The question is whether the letter alone satisfies the evidence rule. Plan the disbursement early enough to clear a clean 28-day window, and if you do rely on a loan letter, keep it fresh and in your name. Get the sequencing right, and your UK student visa funds requirement is met on the terms UKVI actually applies, not the version that looks fine on paper and fails at the visa desk.Â
You are allowed to use your parents' or legal guardian's funds to meet the UK student visa financial requirements, but you are not allowed to be casual about it. Two documents are mandatory, and one behaviour gets people refused.
Â
Â
The behaviour that causes trouble is the sudden lump sum. If a large amount lands in the account a few days before the statement is generated, with no explanation, the caseworker can treat it as unexplained funds and refuse on credibility grounds even when the balance is technically correct. If money is being consolidated from an FD maturity, a property sale, or another account, document where it came from and give it time to settle before the 28-day clock starts.

For Indian applicants, the UK student visa refusal rate has stayed around 4% to 5% across 2024 and 2025, even as financial checks tightened. The striking part is not the rate. It is the cause. Financial evidence, not academic weakness, is consistently the leading reason for refusal.
Â
The pattern behind those refusals repeats itself:
Â
Â
Take one GyanDhan student heading to a one-year Master's outside London, with around £28,500 to show. His father had moved a matured FD and equity sale proceeds into the account ten days before generating the statement, and planned to submit an NBFC loan letter as backup. Both were quiet refusals in the making: the deposit was unexplained and had not sat for 28 days, and the loan letter did not meet the evidence rule on its own. The fix was to document the fund sources, restart the 28-day clock from the settled balance, and route the loan as a disbursement. The application went through cleanly, saving both the fee and a refusal record that would have shadowed every future UK application.
Everything above comes together in the order you actually do it. Here is how to get your proof of funds for a UK student visa ready without tripping a single rule.
Â
Step 1: Confirm the live figure. Check gov.uk in the same week you plan to apply, rather than trusting a number from a blog or a screenshot a senior shared last year.
Â
Step 2: Calculate your exact total. Add your outstanding first-year tuition from your CAS to £13,761 in London or £10,539 outside London, then subtract any tuition and eligible accommodation deposits you have already paid.
Â
Step 3: Consolidate funds early. If money is coming from an FD, a property sale, or a loan, get it into the account and let it settle before the 28-day window begins, and document every source.
Â
Step 4: Protect the balance. Ensure it never dips below your required total on any day, and pause auto-debits that could pull it down mid-window.
Â
Step 5: Convert on the right day. Check the live OANDA rate close to your application date, and keep a buffer so an exchange-rate swing does not push you below the line.
Â
Step 6: Generate a compliant statement. It must show a running or daily balance across the full 28 days, be dated within 31 days of application, and be stamped or verifiable by the bank.
Â
Step 7: Prepare supporting letters. If you are using a parent's account, attach the birth certificate and consent letter. If you are using a loan, ensure the letter is fresh and in your name, or route the money as a disbursement.
The UK student visa financial requirements for Indian students are not hard because the amount is high. They are hard because the rule is precise, it changed twice in one year, and most of the internet did not keep pace. The number is the easy part. Holding the funds for a clean 28 days, dating the statement correctly, converting on the right day, documenting a lump sum, and handling a loan the way the rulebook expects is where applications are won or lost.
Â
If you are funding your UK degree through a loan, this is where the wrong paperwork quietly becomes a refusal. GyanDhan can structure the sanction and disbursement so your UK student visa proof of funds meets the requirement the way a caseworker reads it, and issue a supporting letter within 7 to 10 working days of document submission. Check your loan eligibility to get started. We do not charge for the guidance.
You must show your outstanding first-year tuition plus living costs of £1,529 per month for London or £1,171 per month outside London, up to 9 months. That is £13,761 or £10,539 in maintenance, on top of unpaid tuition, held for 28 consecutive days.
Sometimes it can be used directly, but often it cannot. A loan letter qualifies on its own only if the loan is from a government, a government-sponsored student loan company, or an academic or educational loans scheme, is in your name, and is under 6 months old. For most Indian bank and NBFC loans, the reliable route is to disburse the loan into the account and show it as a 28-day bank balance.
Your required funds must stay in a permitted account for at least 28 consecutive days without dropping below the total on any single day, and the closing balance must be dated within 31 days of your application.
Yes. You must add proof of relationship, usually your birth certificate, and a signed consent letter from your parent or guardian. Only parents and legal guardians are accepted, not other relatives.
Because refusals on the money side are usually about documentation, not wealth: a one-day balance dip, a stale statement, an unexplained lump sum, a wrong conversion date, or a loan letter that does not meet the rule.
Yes, the 3-month bank statement can be enough to prove that you have sufficient funds to sustain yourself in the country and complete your studies well.
