Student Speak 8 - Deepa's story to the University of Auckland, New Zealand for Masters in Architecture

We invite all our customers to a short interview, and a few of them are kind enough to oblige. This is Eight in the series of such interviews.

1. What were you doing before you decided to study abroad?

Before deciding, I was in the academic world working as an Assistant Professor.

2. What motivated you to pursue your course abroad?

My peer group and my seniors suggested me about the good quality of education and growth opportunities, which motivated me to undertake my higher studies abroad.

3. How did you shortlist colleges for applying?

I zeroed down on colleges that offered professional registration on completion.

4. Is there anything you wish you knew when you were applying?

Yes, the job market, and whether there is an adverse need for my skills in the country in which I am applying.

5. Which services did you use at different stages during your application process?

I took the help of IDP Education, Andheri branch for my visa application.

6. How was your experience at your university? Will you recommend this course to your juniors?

I would only recommend the University of Auckland course to juniors only if someone is keen on graduating from a top-level institution.  The true side is that the University doesn’t encourage practical application of the theories, and employers are a bit skeptical on employing students from this University (not applicable to all fields though). However, there are many other institutes in New Zealand, which offers quality education than the University of Auckland.

7. Have you finished your course? If so, what is your next pursuit?

Yes, I finished in March and at the moment I am working.

8. What advice can you offer to your juniors to improve their chances of finding the internship/job of their choice?

My suggestion would be ‘Get a good portfolio and develop keenness to learn, which is much sought out here.’

9. What do you miss most about India?

I miss my family, friends, festivals and rich cultural things.  

10. Are you open to juniors reaching out to you for advice? Which areas can you help them out?

Yes. I can help them with course issues & mentor them during a job search.

12. How was your overall experience at GyanDhan? Did you face any problem during the loan application, and if so, how GyanDhan assisted in redressing the issue?

Yes, there were a few issues that I faced during the loan process.  However, GyanDhan helped in sorting it out and making the process faster.

13. Would you recommend us to your juniors for education loans? If yes, then why?

Yes, I would because it is a pain dealing with the bank staff. And in many instances, people like me are not well equipped and capable of dealing with them. At such instance, GyanDhan came as a big relief.

14. Having experienced the whole process yourself, would you like to add anything else or give a piece of advice for future students?

After experiencing the education system, course, and teaching personally, I feel I could have done much better in India. It is not worth the money unless one is looking at education as a gateway to gain a green card or permanent residency to these countries. I would return back to India in a few years’ time. I am stuck here only to pay off my education loan.
